About Blue Moon Valley
“Instagram paradise meets wedding photo factory — impossibly blue lakes that draw gasps from every visitor, set against snow-capped peaks, with a non-stop parade of couples in wedding gowns posing at every viewpoint.”
Blue Moon Valley is a series of four turquoise lakes fed by glacial meltwater from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, connected by white limestone terraces and small waterfalls. The water gets its striking blue-green color from dissolved copper ions and mineral-rich sediment. Located within the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area, it's usually visited as part of a snow mountain day trip. The scenery is genuinely spectacular on a sunny day — the combination of vivid turquoise water, white terraces, and snow-capped peaks behind creates postcard-perfect views that few places on earth can match. However, expectations need managing: some of the terraces have been enhanced by government engineering to look more dramatic, the area is extremely crowded with tour groups and wedding photo shoots, and on cloudy days the water loses its blue intensity. The experience is more 'Chinese scenic area' than 'untouched wilderness' — expect paved boardwalks, electric shuttles, souvenir shops, and crowd management systems. Despite the commercialization, the natural beauty is real and overwhelming. The blue of the water really is that intense on sunny days, and the mountain backdrop is genuinely awe-inspiring. Budget 1-1.5 hours and try to visit early to beat the crowds.
Top Questions from Travelers
Why This Place Matters
Blue Moon Valley was originally called White Water River (白水河) because the white marble and limestone riverbed made the water appear white. It was renamed after the valley's crescent shape and blue water reminded visitors of the fictional Blue Moon Valley in James Hilton's 1933 novel 'Lost Horizon,' which described a hidden paradise called Shangri-La in the mountains of Yunnan. For the local Naxi people, the river holds deep spiritual significance — tradition says the glacial water was used by gods to reach the valley, and suitors would prove their love by standing barefoot in the freezing water under the sacred snow mountain. The valley sits within a AAAAA-rated scenic area (China's highest designation) and has been developed since 2006 with boardwalks, shuttle systems, and landscape engineering to accommodate the millions of annual visitors.

3 iconic experiences that define a visit

Yuye Lake (玉液湖) — the bluest lake
The first and most famous lake, with the most intense turquoise color and the best views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflected in the water. This is the money shot — the scene you see in every Yunnan travel brochure.
This is genuinely one of the most photogenic natural scenes in China. The combination of impossible blue water, white terraces, and snow peaks behind is breathtaking even for seasoned travelers. On a clear day, it rivals any alpine lake in the world.

What Most Visitors Miss
Walking the full trail instead of taking the shuttle between stops
Most visitors shuttle between the main viewpoints and miss the smaller cascades, quiet pools, and forest sections between the four lakes. The full 3.5 km boardwalk walk reveals hidden gems that the shuttle skips.
The opposite side of the lakes (across the footbridge)
Most visitors cluster at the main viewpoints on one side. Crossing to the opposite shore provides uncrowded vantage points, unique reflections, and a more peaceful experience.
Spruce Meadow (云杉坪) as an alternative to the glacier
Instead of the expensive and crowded glacier cable car, Spruce Meadow offers a peaceful alpine meadow experience at lower altitude with similar mountain views and far fewer tourists.

Cloudy or rainy days — the water loses its blue magic and looks grey-green
By Season
Spring
Summer
(June-August) has more rain and clouds. Winter (December-February) has clear skies but colder temperatures.
Autumn
Winter
(December-February) has clear skies but colder temperatures. October is particularly good — autumn colors, clear skies, and fewer crowds than summer.
Check the weather forecast obsessively — Blue Moon Valley's beauty is 80% dependent on sunshine. If your planned day is cloudy, reschedule if possible. A sunny day here is magical; a cloudy day is disappointing.
What to Skip
The overpriced food and souvenir stalls inside the scenic area — bring your own snacks and water from Lijiang. The Naxi costume photo rental stations — fun but expensive (¥50-100) and every tourist does it. The yak photo ops (¥20-30) — the yaks are overworked tourist props. If you forgot to bring snacks, message us and we can arrange delivery of water and food to the scenic area entrance.
Pro Tips
Wear white or bright red clothing to contrast against the blue water for stunning photos — this is a pro tip from Chinese photographers. Bring your own water and snacks as food inside is 2-3x normal prices. If you're only interested in Blue Moon Valley and not the glacier, you can save money by skipping the cable car entirely.
Photo Spots
Yuye Lake main viewpoint
Arrive between 11 AM - 1 PM for the most vivid blue color. Use a polarizing filter to reduce water surface glare and intensify the blue. Wear white or red for maximum contrast against the turquoise water.
White Water Terraces (白水台)
Use wide-angle to capture the cascade effect of the terraces. Shoot from both above and below for different perspectives. Early morning light creates beautiful shadows across the white limestone.
The road bridge across Yuye Lake
Stand on the bridge for symmetrical shots with water on both sides and the mountain ahead. This angle captures the full scope of the valley. Cloudy reflection days can actually produce stunning moody shots from this position.

Tips & Warnings
Weather makes or breaks this experience
Blue Moon Valley on a sunny day is magical; on a cloudy day it's disappointing. The water only achieves its famous blue color with direct sunlight. Check the weather forecast and be flexible with your schedule — prioritize this for your sunniest day in Lijiang.
Some features are artificially enhanced
The Chinese government has done engineering work to enhance the terraces and water features. Some visitors who expect untouched wilderness are disappointed to learn that portions are man-made. Accept it as a managed scenic area rather than raw nature and you'll enjoy it more.
Extremely crowded during peak season
Expect large tour groups, wedding photographers blocking viewpoints, and long shuttle bus queues. Early morning arrival (before 9 AM) is essential for a peaceful experience. By midday, the crowds can feel overwhelming.
Altitude of 2,900 meters
While much lower than the glacier peak, the altitude can still cause mild symptoms in visitors from sea level — headaches, breathlessness. The valley is flat with abundant vegetation and relatively high oxygen levels, so most visitors are fine. Drink extra water and move at a relaxed pace.
What to Bring
Wear
Layers — the valley can be chilly in the morning and warm by midday. Comfortable walking shoes for the boardwalk. Bright colored clothing (white, red) photographs beautifully against the blue water. Sunglasses are essential for the glare off the water.
Bring
Sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, hat. Camera with wide-angle capability. Water and snacks (save money vs. buying inside). Passport (mandatory for entry). Light warm jacket.
Don't Bring
Heavy hiking gear (the trails are flat boardwalks). Umbrella (hope for sunshine). Oxygen canisters (altitude is manageable at 2,900m — save these for the glacier if going).
Physical Reality
light
Flat boardwalk trails with occasional gentle slopes. Total walking distance is about 3.5 km if you walk the full trail, but the shuttle bus can reduce this to just short walks at each viewpoint (200-300 meters per stop). No significant stairs. The boardwalk is well-maintained and suitable for most visitors.
Foreigners Watch Out
- Bring your passport — entry to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area is denied without valid ID. This catches foreign visitors off guard.
- Tickets for the scenic area can only be purchased via WeChat in some cases. Have WeChat set up with payment capability, or buy through Trip.com / your hotel in advance. If you’re stuck on the booking, message our concierge — we can purchase tickets on your behalf and send you the confirmation details.
- The water contains copper ions and is NOT drinkable despite its crystal-clear appearance. Don't let children play in it.
- UV radiation is extremely strong at 2,900 meters elevation. Wear SPF 50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat even on partially cloudy days.
- The return shuttle bus queues in late afternoon (4:00-5:30 PM) can take 30-45 minutes. Plan to leave early or be patient. If you’d rather skip the queue, our team can arrange a private driver to meet you at the scenic area exit at a set time.
If Things Go Wrong
Cloudy weather — the water isn't blue
→ The White Water Terraces and mountain views are still worth seeing even without peak water color. Focus on the natural landscape rather than the color. The valley has a different, moody beauty in overcast conditions.
Too crowded to enjoy the viewpoints
→ Cross the footbridge to the opposite side of the lakes where 90% of tourists don't go. Walk the full boardwalk between stops rather than shuttling — the spaces between main viewpoints are much quieter. Visit early morning or time your arrival for after the main tour group wave.
