About Xingping Ancient Town
“Dreamily scenic with an edge of tourist wear — ancient stone lanes opening to jaw-dropping karst mountain river vistas, where elderly fishermen still cast nets alongside tourists snapping selfies with 20-yuan notes.”
Xingping is where the Li River's most dramatic scenery lives — the stretch of karst peaks reflected in green water that adorns China's 20-yuan note. The town itself is a mixed bag: the old stone streets with Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture have genuine character, but commercialization has crept in with the usual souvenir shops and tourist restaurants. The real draw is the surrounding landscape — the 20-yuan photo spot, bamboo rafting on the Li River, and the hilltop viewpoints. Cormorant fishing demonstrations exist but are increasingly staged for tourists. The town is best used as a base for river activities and photography rather than a destination in itself. Morning mist on the Li River is genuinely magical and worth an early alarm. Best for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to hold up a 20-yuan note against the actual scenery.
Top Questions from Travelers
Why This Place Matters
Xingping has been a market town for over 1,700 years, sitting at a crucial bend in the Li River where the karst scenery reaches its most dramatic peak. The town's inclusion on the 20-yuan banknote (introduced in 1999) transformed it from a sleepy fishing village into a tourist destination — a transformation still visibly in progress. The cormorant fishing tradition that many tourists seek was a genuine livelihood for centuries, using trained birds to catch fish in the river. Today, the few remaining fishermen earn more from tourist photos than from fishing, a bittersweet evolution that mirrors China's rural-to-tourism economy shift. The karst landscape itself formed over 300 million years of limestone dissolution — these mountains are ancient seabed pushed skyward, then sculpted by water into the impossible shapes that Chinese painters have celebrated for millennia. When you see the 20-yuan scenery, you're looking at the same view that inspired an entire tradition of landscape painting.

4 iconic experiences that define a visit

20-Yuan Banknote Viewpoint (黄布倒影)
The exact spot depicted on China's 20-yuan note — karst peaks (including Element Hill) reflected in the Li River with bamboo rafts drifting past. A marked viewpoint 15-20 minutes from town lets you hold up the banknote against the real scenery for the classic comparison photo.
This is one of those rare cases where the real scenery matches (or exceeds) the famous image. The combination of water, mountains, and light is genuinely breathtaking. Bring a 20-yuan note for the obligatory photo.

What Most Visitors Miss
Staying overnight for sunrise on the Li River
Most visitors day-trip from Yangshuo and miss Xingping's most magical moment — morning mist lifting off the river with karst peaks emerging from fog. Guesthouses are cheap (¥100-200/night) and the evening town atmosphere after tourists leave is peaceful.
The fisherman photo opportunity at dawn/dusk
Local fishermen still cast nets at dawn and dusk near the pier. While the staged cormorant fishing shows are touristy, the real fishermen at their daily work create more authentic and compelling photographs.
Exploring by electric scooter along the river road
Renting an electric scooter (¥50-80/day) lets you explore the riverbanks, smaller villages, and viewpoints that are inaccessible to tour groups. The road between Xingping and Yangshuo passes through stunning karst scenery.

Best Time to Visit

Midday (11 AM–2 PM) when light is harsh, temperatures peak, and tour groups from Li River cruises flood the pier area
By Season
Spring
(March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best weather and clearest skies. Summer (June-August) is hot, humid, and rainy, though the rain can create atmospheric mist effects.
Summer
(June-August) is hot, humid, and rainy, though the rain can create atmospheric mist effects. Winter (December-February) is cool with occasional fog — great for moody photography but some river activities may be suspended during low water levels.
Autumn
(September-November) offer the best weather and clearest skies. Summer (June-August) is hot, humid, and rainy, though the rain can create atmospheric mist effects.
Winter
Stay overnight in Xingping rather than day-tripping from Yangshuo. The town empties by 6 PM when day-trippers leave, and sunrise on the Li River (especially in spring/autumn) is one of China's most photographed natural scenes.
What to Skip
The overpriced tourist restaurants on the main street — walk one block off the main drag for better, cheaper local food. The staged cormorant fishing shows are expensive for what they are — unless photography is your priority. Generic souvenir shops selling items available in every Chinese tourist town.
Pro Tips
Bring a 20-yuan note specifically for the photo (everyone does it and it's genuinely fun). If photographing the cormorant fishermen, negotiate the price and time in advance — they charge per session, not per photo. The best light for river photography is the first and last hour of daylight.
Photo Spots
20-yuan viewpoint at Yellow Cloth Shoal
Arrive at 6-7 AM for morning mist. Bring the 20-yuan note for the comparison shot. A tripod helps for long exposures in low morning light. The reflections are best when the water is calm.
Laozhai Hill summit
Sunrise or sunset. Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the full 360-degree panorama of the Li River bend and surrounding peaks. The hike takes 20-30 minutes — start 45 minutes before sunrise.
Xingping pier at dawn with fishermen
Be there before 6:30 AM when real fishermen prepare nets. The combination of bamboo rafts, misty river, and karst silhouettes creates photos that look like traditional Chinese ink paintings.
Ancient Street side alleys
Look for contrasts — weathered stone walls, wooden doors, hanging red lanterns against grey architecture. Best in soft overcast light or the warm glow of late afternoon.
Pair With
Yangshuo West Street (阳朔西街)
1 hour by bus or 30 minutes by car
The backpacker-friendly town 30 km south — more international restaurants, better nightlife, and a different atmosphere. Yangshuo is more party, Xingping is more scenery. Easy to do both.
Yulong River Bamboo Rafting (遇龙河)
45 minutes by car (via Yangshuo)
A quieter, hand-poled bamboo raft experience on a tributary of the Li River near Yangshuo. Less dramatic scenery than Xingping but more intimate and peaceful — a different kind of river magic.
Guilin city highlights (Elephant Trunk Hill, Reed Flute Cave)
2 hours by car or Li River cruise from Xingping
The regional capital has its own karst scenery within the city, plus excellent rice noodles. Makes sense as a first or last stop if flying in/out of Guilin.

Tips & Warnings
The town is more commercialized than photos suggest
The main street has tourist shops and restaurants like any Chinese tourist town. The real charm is in the side alleys, the pier area, and the surrounding riverside scenery. Don't judge Xingping by its main drag.
Bamboo raft operators can be aggressive with pricing
Agree on the route and total price before boarding. The standard Xingping-Nine Horse Painting Hill route should be around ¥120/person. Don't accept vague pricing or 'we'll see' answers. If you prefer to skip the negotiation, message us beforehand and we can arrange a raft at a fair price with a confirmed route.
The Laozhai Hill trail is rough and unofficial
There are no railings, the path is steep and potentially slippery, and some sections require scrambling. Don't attempt it in rain, in the dark without a flashlight, or if you have mobility concerns.
Limited ATM and banking services
Xingping is a small town — bring enough cash. WeChat/Alipay are widely accepted but having cash as backup is essential. The nearest major banks are in Yangshuo.
What to Bring
Wear
Comfortable walking shoes with grip for the cobblestone streets and Laozhai Hill trail. Layers — mornings can be cool even in summer, especially on the river. Quick-dry clothing in rainy season.
Bring
Camera with zoom lens (essential for this location). 20-yuan banknote for comparison photo. Rain jacket. Sunscreen and hat. Water bottle. Cash (limited card acceptance). Translation app with offline Chinese. Flashlight/headlamp if planning sunrise hike.
Don't Bring
Heavy luggage if day-tripping. The cobblestone streets are unfriendly to wheeled bags.
Physical Reality
easy-to-strenuous (depending on activities)
Town walking and 20-yuan viewpoint: easy, flat to gentle incline. Bamboo rafting: easy (sitting). Laozhai Hill hike: strenuous — steep, rough trail with scrambling sections, about 20-30 minutes up. Cobblestone streets are uneven.
Foreigners Watch Out
- Transportation to/from Xingping requires planning — there's no metro or major bus terminal. Buses from Yangshuo run regularly but can be confusing. Consider a pre-arranged car or book through your accommodation. Our team can arrange private transport from Yangshuo or Guilin to Xingping, timed to get you there for sunrise or whatever schedule works best.
- English is very limited in Xingping — significantly less than Yangshuo or Guilin. A translation app (Google Translate with offline Chinese) is almost essential for restaurant ordering and price negotiations.
- Bamboo raft operators may try to add surcharges for 'special photo stops' or extended routes. Agree on everything before departure.
- The cormorant fishermen are a photo business, not an authentic fishing demonstration. Prices are per session (typically ¥200-500) and negotiable. Clarify what you're paying for before agreeing. Our team can negotiate the session price and terms in Chinese before you commit, so there are no surprises.
- Weather in karst country changes rapidly — clear morning can become rainy afternoon. Always carry a light rain jacket.
If Things Go Wrong
Rainy weather ruins visibility for photography
→ Misty, light rain actually creates some of the most atmospheric Li River photos — the karst peaks emerging from clouds is a classic Chinese painting aesthetic. Only heavy rain is truly problematic.
Bamboo rafts not operating (weather, low water, off-season)
→ Walk along the riverside path to the 20-yuan viewpoint — the scenery is equally beautiful from the bank. Hire a small motorboat if available.
Can't find transportation back to Yangshuo/Guilin
→ Ask your guesthouse to arrange a car. The bus station has regular services to Yangshuo. DiDi works here but drivers may be limited — book early. Or message our concierge and we can dispatch a driver to collect you — we handle the Chinese-language logistics so you do not have to.
