Overview

About Wulong Karst National Geology Park

A geological cathedral — towering natural stone arches, shafts of light piercing through sinkholes, emerald streams in shadowy gorges, and the constant drip-drip-drip of water that spent millions of years sculpting these impossible formations.

Wulong Karst is one of the most visually spectacular geological sites in China, featuring three main attractions spread across a large area: the Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥), Longshuixia Gorge (龙水峡地缝), and Furong Cave (芙蓉洞). The Three Natural Bridges are the headliner — three massive natural stone arches formed by collapsed sinkholes, creating a dramatic landscape that served as a filming location for 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' and 'Curse of the Golden Flower.' You descend via elevator or stairs into a colossal sinkhole, then walk through a canyon linking the three bridges, with a reconstructed ancient inn (Tianfu Guanyi) at the bottom providing a fairy-tale centerpiece. Longshuixia Gorge is a separate but equally impressive slot canyon with waterfalls and emerald streams. The experiences require moderate walking on well-maintained stone steps — mostly downhill with elevator access. The logistics can be confusing: everything funnels through a visitor center at the Fairy Mountain (Xiannu Zhen) area, and shuttle buses connect to each attraction. Plan a full day, ideally two. The scenery genuinely lives up to the UNESCO designation, but be prepared for Chinese-scale tourist infrastructure and crowds during peak periods.

Cultural Context

Why This Place Matters

Wulong Karst was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2007 as part of the South China Karst system. The Three Natural Bridges are the largest natural bridge cluster in Asia, formed over millions of years as underground rivers dissolved limestone to create caverns, which eventually collapsed to form the current sinkhole-and-bridge landscape. The Tianfu Guanyi (inn) at the bottom of the central sinkhole is a reconstruction of an ancient courier station on the route between Chongqing and Guizhou — a reminder that people have been traveling through this dramatic landscape for centuries. The area gained international recognition as a filming location for Zhang Yimou's 'Curse of the Golden Flower' (2006) and Michael Bay's 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' (2014), as well as the Chinese reality show 'Where Are We Going, Dad?' The geological significance is genuine — these formations represent some of the most dramatic karst processes on earth.

Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥)
Universal Appeal

Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥)

Three colossal natural stone bridges — Tianlong Bridge, Qinglong Bridge, and Heilong Bridge — connected by a walking path through massive sinkholes. The bridges range from 90 to 120 meters high and span 150-300 meters. At the bottom of the central sinkhole sits the reconstructed Tianfu Guanyi (inn), used as a filming location for 'Curse of the Golden Flower.'

The scale is genuinely jaw-dropping — photos don't capture how massive these natural formations are. The engineering of the walking paths and elevator is impressive without being intrusive. This was also a filming location for 'Transformers: Age of Extinction.'

The money shot is looking down from the viewing platform at the top before descending — you can see the Tianfu Inn dwarfed by the surrounding cliffs. Video captures the scale better than photos. Take the elevator down rather than walking — save your knees for the canyon walk.

What Most Visitors Miss

01

The panoramic glass viewing platform at the top

Before taking the elevator down to the Three Natural Bridges, there's a glass-floored viewing platform offering a bird's-eye view straight down into the sinkhole. Some visitors rush past to get to the elevator without stopping here.

02

Combining Three Natural Bridges and Longshuixia Gorge in one day

The shuttle bus system is designed for this — finish Three Natural Bridges in the morning, take the shuttle back, then bus to Longshuixia Gorge for the afternoon. Most organized tours only do one; do both for the full experience.

03

The Impression Wulong evening show

A large-scale outdoor performance directed by Zhang Yimou, set against the natural mountain backdrop. Runs evenings during peak season — check schedules as it depends on weather.

Winter

Pro Tip

Visit on a slightly overcast day — the diffused light creates more dramatic shadows in the canyons and gorges, and mist hanging in the sinkholes adds an otherworldly atmosphere. Bright sunshine can actually wash out the scenery.

What to Skip

Skip the separate 'sightseeing elevator' upsell if offered as an add-on — the standard elevator included in your ticket takes you to the same place. Skip Fairy Mountain if time is limited — it's pleasant grassland but can't compete with the geological drama of the bridges and gorge.

Pro Tips

Tickets are valid for 3 days — don't try to rush everything into one day if you have time. Bring food and water into the parks — options inside are limited and overpriced. The shuttle buses run frequently but stop running at closing time — don't linger too long or you'll be walking out. Weekday visits avoid the worst crowds. If you forget to stock up on food and water, message us before you head into the park — we can arrange a delivery to your Fairy Mountain hotel.

Photo Spots

📍

Top of the elevator — looking down at Tianfu Inn in the sinkhole

This bird's-eye view of the tiny inn surrounded by towering cliffs is the iconic Wulong shot. Take it BEFORE descending in the elevator. Wide-angle lens essential.

📍

Inside the first sinkhole — looking up at Tianlong Bridge

Stand at the base and look straight up through the natural arch. Include people in the frame for scale. The bridge is 235 meters high — photos struggle to convey this.

📍

Longshuixia Gorge waterfall sections

The narrow gorge with waterfalls cascading down mossy walls photographs beautifully. Use a slow shutter speed (0.5-1 second) for silky waterfall effects. A waterproof phone case is advisable.

Know Before You Go

Tips & Warnings

⚠️

Logistics are confusing — multiple ticket types and shuttle buses

Everything funnels through the Fairy Mountain visitor center (仙女山游客中心). Buy your tickets here, then take the designated shuttle bus to each attraction. Don't try to drive directly to the attractions — private vehicles can't access them. If the shuttle bus system feels overwhelming, message our team — we can walk you through the route in real time or arrange a local guide who handles all the logistics.

⚠️

Wet and slippery conditions year-round

The karst environment means constant moisture. Stone steps are perpetually damp and slippery. Non-slip shoes are essential, not optional. A rain jacket or cheap raincoat (¥5-10) is more practical than an umbrella in the narrow gorges.

⚠️

Significant walking on stone steps — mostly downhill but still tiring

The Three Natural Bridges route is about 3-4km of walking, mostly downhill. Longshuixia Gorge has more uneven terrain with steep sections. Neither is extreme, but combined they add up to 5-7km of walking on stone paths.

⚠️

Getting there takes time from Chongqing city

Plan 2-3 hours each way by car or 1-2 hours by train (Chongqing North Station to Wulong Station), plus 30 minutes by local bus from Wulong Station to the visitor center. An early start is essential for a day trip. We can arrange a private car from Chongqing to the visitor center if you'd prefer door-to-door transport without the train-to-bus transfer.

What to Bring

Wear

Non-slip shoes (the single most important item). Layers — the sinkholes and gorges are cool even in summer. Rain jacket or plan to buy a cheap raincoat at the park. Comfortable walking clothes.

Bring

Water and snacks. Camera. Rain protection. Portable battery for phone. Cash for park vendors. A small daypack rather than a big bag.

Don't Bring

Heavy luggage — leave it at your hotel. Umbrellas are impractical in the narrow gorge sections; raincoats work better.

Physical Reality

LightModerateHeavy

moderate

Three Natural Bridges: 3-4km mostly downhill walk on stone steps with elevator access. Longshuixia Gorge: ~2km with steeper sections and uneven terrain. Combined total of 5-7km of walking over a full day. No extreme climbs required — the elevator handles the major elevation change.

Suitable for most ages. Children enjoy the dramatic scenery. Elderly visitors can manage the Three Natural Bridges with the elevator; Longshuixia Gorge is more challenging with steeper steps. Strollers are impractical on stone paths.

Foreigners Watch Out

  • Tickets can be purchased with passport at the visitor center. Online purchase via Ctrip is also possible.
  • The shuttle bus system between attractions can be confusing — ask at the visitor center for a map and shuttle schedule. Buses run on fixed routes.
  • Food options inside the park are very limited — bring snacks and water. The Fairy Mountain town has restaurants for before/after visits.
  • The train from Chongqing to Wulong is the cheapest option (¥25 each way). From Wulong station, a local blue bus (¥10) goes to the Fairy Mountain visitor center in about 30 minutes.
  • Cell signal is intermittent inside the deep sinkholes and gorges. Download offline maps and save your hotel address before entering.

If Things Go Wrong

Arrived and it's raining heavily

Light rain actually enhances the atmosphere — waterfalls flow stronger and mist creates dramatic effects. Buy a cheap raincoat (¥5-10) from park vendors. Wear non-slip shoes and walk carefully on wet stone steps.

Too crowded to enjoy

Enter at opening time (8:00-8:30 AM) or after 2 PM when morning tour groups have finished. Weekday visits avoid the worst congestion.

Missed the last shuttle bus back

The exit points for the one-way walking routes have taxi availability. Expect to pay ¥50-100 for a ride back to the visitor center or your hotel. Drop us a message and we can call a local taxi to your exit point — much easier than trying to flag one down yourself.
